Location & Map Overview

A place blessed by nature. Located on Evoia, the second biggest island of Greece, Edipsos is famous for its thermal springs that heal and rejuvenate ever since Antiquity. Hippocrates and Aristotle visited the springs and wrote about its benefits and the rare microclimate they create. The sea is always warm and the sun shines 300 days a year, tempting visitors for a dive even in winter! However the location has more to offer. Day trips to the Acropolis,to Delphi and to Meteora, or a visit to one of the numerous small churches and monasteries will help you feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Whatever your interest is beyond the property's premises, we can arrange for a tour or activity within the greater region.

By air, the nearest airport is Athens (140 km).

By land, Evia can be reached at a distance of 180 km from Athens, making it accessible by car within an hour approximately.

Churches & Monasteries

  • Church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) the Russian Lying less than an hour away from Thermae Sylla by car, this is one of the most famous churches on Evia in the village of Prokopi. Built in 1951, it honors a simple Christian man, Ioannis, who after fighting against the Turks in his native Russia, was captured, enslaved, and taken to the original Prokopi in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (Turkey).
  • Monastery of Osios David Rovion At the foot of Mount Kavalaris, the all-male monastery of Osios David Rovion in Roviews was established in the 16th century and later destroyed by the Ottomans during the Greek revolution. It was rebuilt in 1877, and includes catacombs as well as a small chapel built in a small cave not far off.
  • Monastery of Agios Georgios Ilion This picturesque monastery and church complex sits in a lofty spot between the mountains of Telethrio and Gymno. Built in 1834, the monastery was originally home to monks. This changed in 1970, when it became a women’s monastery.
  • Cave of Agios Christodoulos Though not an official “church”, the small altar set in the cave of St. Chirstodoulos honours the saint who sought refuge and became a hermit within it during the 10th century. It is located just outside the seaside town of Limni.

Monuments & Attractions

  • Syllas Cave Considered one of the best preserved sites since the Roman era, this cave not far from the property and next to the Church of Aghion Anargyron was where the Roman General Syllas cured the arthritis in his legs. There are intriguing ancient Greek inscriptions outside the cave that pay tribute to the Roman leaders of the time.
  • Venetian tower dwelling Visit this well preserved and lone Venetian tower sits in the center of Rovies, an attractive seaside village. The tower which is three floors high was built in the 13th century. Today it represents a kind of folklore museum containing old tools and antiques from the town.
  • Tower of Aidipsos Right in this town there are ruins of a Frankish tower that once housed Petronella Tokka, the former Baroness of Aidipsos and nearby Lichada.
  • Ancient acropolis of Oreoi While not much are left of the walls and foundations of this acropolis of the ancient city of Oreoi, it might be worth a visit for the view. It lies just outside the little port of the modern town.
  • Roman Baths of Gialtra This little town which isn't far from Aidipsos also once had important thermal baths. Today only bits remain of the ancient baths along the beach today, although visitors can still dip into the thermal waters.
  • Cape Artemisio Of great historic significance, Cape Artemisio is known for its treacherous waters that spelled the end of many sailors here.
  • Sanctuary of Artemis Proseioas Just outside the small village of Pefki on a hill, there are some ruins of an archaic temple that paid tribute to the goddess Artemis.
  • Drosini Tower In the village of Gouvies the Drosini Tower is named after the last person to call it home, the poet Georgios Drosinis. It was built half a century before the poet was born by an Ottoman slave who won his freedom after designing it.
  • Byzantine and medieval castle of Oreoi Overlooking the peaceful seaside village of Oreoi, the remains of a once-grand castle stand sentinel. Built up during the period of Frankish rule, the castle was inhabited continuously throughout the Byzantine and medieval periods.
  • Archaeological Museum of Aidipsos This small yet interesting exhibit is housed in the same building as the public baths of the municipality. Some noteworthy artefacts include a marble depiction of Hercules and a Roman statue of the demigod.
  • Museum of Natural History of Istieia The home of Greece’s largest collection of stuffed birds as well as a large variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rocks and minerals, fossils and shells is this large and impressive museum in the northern town of Istieia.

SPORTS

A wide range of activities from hiking and diving to birdwatching and horse riding are available in this region. Get ready to discover the very best of Northern Evia!

  • Cycling Northern Evia’s thick pine forests and easy-going coastal roads provide cyclists with endless opportunities to enjoy the region from a different angle. The northwestern section of the area is particularly picturesque and bike rental is easy to find around the health-inclined resort of Aidipsos.
  • Diving Conveniently located along the beach of Aidipsos, the experts at Diving Travel can help divers get the certification they need and enjoy diving in the rich and beautiful waters of northern Evia. Equipment rental is also available here. Alternatively, with its home base adjacent from what are referred to as the Greek “Seychelles”, Lichadonisia Diving Center in Agios Giorgios is a one-stop place for learning everything there is to know about diving, renting equipment, or finding guides to the best dive sites throughout northern Evia.
  • WindsurfingThough not as popular as southern Evia, the coastal towns of Limni and Kanatadika can be great places to enjoy the sport when there is enough wind. Finding a breeze will certainly not be an issue in the northern town of Pefki where you can expect a decent wind year-round and must actually be careful in August due to the severity of the northern Meltemi winds which pelt the area during this time.
  • Canyoning The Gorge of Nileas and the river by the same name provide a unique and intriguing landscape for canyoning and hiking enthusiasts. Swimming is unavoidable in some areas and canyoners must cross through narrow passes and caves along the way.
  • Hiking You can hike from Agios to Prokopi in 6.5 hours, from Drymonas Falls to Mount Ksiron in 3.5 hours and from Mnimeio to Mount Pyksarias in 6.5 hours. Other hiking areas include the Nileas Gorge, Kastaniotissa, Mount Telethrio and many others.
  • Horseback riding Surrounded by the rich forests of the Telethrio Mountain Range, the Petalo Horse Riding Center invites equestrian experts and novices to explore the beauty of northern Evia atop one of nature’s most majestic creatures.
  • Bird watching Northern Evia’s diverse landscape of open meadows, mountain ranges, wetlands and rocky seaside cliffs provide a welcome variety to several types of birds. The two main areas of interest among bird watchers are the Kandili Mountains to the West and the wetlands and lagoons of Istiea in the Northern part of the region. The low mountains of Kandili are a favoured habitat among migratory birds and also serve as an invaluable breeding ground for large raptors.

Thermal Spring

The mineral spring baths was considered to mark the beginning of the third age a few years back. Nowadays this has changed and younger people seek in its rejuvenating properties their body and mind balance for a positive approach to life.

The mineral springs of Edipsos have been famous for their healing properties since the 4th century B.C. The Ancient Greek writers and philosophers such as Aristotle, Strabo, Plutarch, make many references to these springs. In Edipsos the mineral spring water springs from natural wells as deep as 3,000 m at temperatures of 75-85ο C.

Thermae Sylla boasts one of the most therapeutic spa waters in the world, thanks to its hot springs that are at least three kilometers deep. The water under the property is particularly rich with different metals and elements, measuring at about 40-45 grams per liter. This is many times more in minerals than what the sea contains. Importantly the water at Thermae Sylla also has traces of Radon which has been proven to stimulate the immune system and offer other therapeutic benefits in the right dose.

Academic studies have verified that the Thermae Sylla spring waters are of the highest quality, rich in metallic elements such as calcium, potassium, iron, lithium, magnesium, and sodium. Importantly, the magnesium to calcium ratio is 1:4, representing the ideal combination for the body to absorb both the magnesium and the calcium, in line with the findings of the International Magnesium Commission.
